Is China’s self-driving technology making global strides?

Chinese company Pony.ai is set to expand its global robotaxi fleet to thousands by 2025, marking the year for large-scale commercial deployment. The company has begun testing its autonomous vehicles in Luxembourg, collaborating with Emile Weber to accelerate the adoption of robotaxis in Europe. Pony.ai’s CEO, James Peng, highlighted this as a step forward in advancing autonomous mobility in Luxembourg and across the continent.

In April, Pony.ai received a Level 4 autonomous driving testing permit in Luxembourg, adding to its existing permits in China, the U.S., and South Korea. Luxembourg has been chosen as the company’s European hub for developing and deploying autonomous driving technology.

Autonomous driving is classified from Level 0 to Level 5, with Level 4 vehicles capable of operating independently in most situations, though manual intervention remains an option.

Last month, Pony.ai partnered with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority to integrate self-driving technology into the city’s transport network. This will begin with supervised trials this year, moving to fully driverless operations by 2026.

Founded in 2016, Pony.ai has completed over 45 million kilometers of autonomous testing worldwide and provides driverless ride-hailing in several Chinese cities. In South Korea, they have initiated road tests in Seoul through a joint venture and are planning trials in Singapore. The company also formed a strategic partnership with Uber, aiming to launch services in a major Middle Eastern market before expanding internationally.
