Huawei ICT Academy is on a mission to equip young Kenyans with competitive digital skills through its nationwide campaign, recently visiting Strathmore University. The initiative aims to double participation in the upcoming 2025/2026 ICT Competition to a record 12,000 students. This competition offers Kenyan youth opportunities to enhance their skills and gain global exposure, with registration open from September to November. The competition will culminate in national, regional, and global finals.
Since its launch in Kenya in 2018, the Huawei ICT Competition has empowered over 12,000 students, providing technical mentorship and industry skills. The campaign was officially launched at PC Kinyanjui Institute, with strong student participation. Huawei plans to extend its mentorship program to universities and TVET institutions nationwide.
Huawei ICT Academy Manager, Michael Kamau, expressed optimism about the students’ enthusiasm for embracing the digital future. At Kenyatta University, students were encouraged to participate and apply their knowledge to solve real-world challenges. The competition includes tracks in networking, cloud computing, computing, and innovation, offering students a chance to showcase their talents.
The competition is part of a partnership between Huawei and the State Department for TVET, aiming to establish 150 ICT Academies in Kenya. Huawei will certify 1,000 students annually and train 150 instructors, while SDTVET will promote Huawei’s programs and support talent development initiatives.
Encouraging more young women to participate, Huawei’s Public Affairs Director, Eng. Maureen Mwaniki, highlighted the importance of leadership roles in technology. The enrollment campaign will continue across various institutions in Kenya, offering students valuable opportunities for growth and development in the ICT sector.
