Hyundai is making strides in sustainable automotive interiors by exploring bio-based leather alternatives. In collaboration with UNCAGED Innovations, a biomaterials manufacturer, Hyundai is developing animal-free leather using grain byproducts. This initiative is part of the broader sustainability efforts by Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Kia and Genesis, to create greener materials for both electric and gasoline vehicles. The innovative material promises significant reductions in resource consumption, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 95%, water usage by 89%, and energy consumption by 71%, all while maintaining the quality and durability of traditional leather. Unlike other alternatives, this grain-based protein leather mimics the collagen structure found in animal hides, offering a realistic texture. Although no specific timeline has been announced, the new material could debut in Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models as early as 2027.
