The Chinese company iFlytek, which is on a US blacklist, has launched a new entity to venture into the semiconductor sector and other AI-related fields, aligning with China’s broader goal of technological self-reliance. The newly formed Shandong Yixun Information Technology, established with a registered capital of 50 million yuan (approximately US$7.1 million), will focus on integrated circuit design, AI software development, and technical consulting for AI public service platforms. While iFlytek, known for its voice-recognition software, is based in Hefei, Anhui province, it has not disclosed further details about Shandong Yixun’s business operations. This strategic move highlights the increasing significance of semiconductor design in China, as more domestic tech firms aim to develop AI processors that could compete with global giants like Nvidia and AMD. Meanwhile, the US has announced a tariff plan on a range of Chinese semiconductors, starting at a 0 per cent rate and set to increase by June 2027, with specific rates to be revealed 30 days prior to the deadline.
