Apple is set to enhance interoperability with its latest update, iOS 26.3, aligning with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). This update will grant third-party device manufacturers the same access to features previously exclusive to Apple products. Notably, wearable device makers in the EU can now test proximity pairing and enhanced notifications. The proximity pairing feature simplifies the process, allowing devices like earbuds to connect to an iPhone or iPad with a single tap when brought close, eliminating the need for multiple steps. Additionally, third-party smartwatches will now be able to receive and respond to notifications from an iPhone, a function that was once limited to the Apple Watch. However, notifications can only be directed to one device at a time, meaning enabling notifications for a third-party device will disable them on an Apple Watch. These new capabilities are currently available for testing, with full availability expected in Europe by 2026. The European Commission has applauded these changes, highlighting them as a step towards a more interconnected digital ecosystem for EU citizens. The iOS 26.3 update is anticipated to be released at the end of January, exclusively for users and device makers within the European Union.
