Is Microsoft making Copilot AI more interactive with human-like avatars?

Microsoft is enhancing its Copilot AI assistant by introducing animated human-like faces for more engaging interactions. Available in the US, UK, and Canada, the new “Portraits” feature offers 40 stylized avatars that respond with natural expressions during voice conversations. This initiative aims to make interactions more comfortable and natural for users who prefer speaking to a face rather than text-based communication. The technology, developed by Microsoft Research, uses advanced AI to generate facial expressions and lip-sync from a single image, eliminating the need for complex 3D modeling. While similar to the previously announced “Copilot Appearances,” Portraits focuses on human-like appearances rather than animated characters. The feature is currently available to a select group of users aged 18 and over, with time limits and clear AI interaction indicators in place to ensure safety.
