Microsoft is reportedly gearing up for the anticipated release of GPT-5 by testing a new “smart mode” in its Copilot application. This mode, designed to streamline the use of AI models, is being trialed across both consumer and commercial versions of Microsoft 365 Copilot. The smart mode aims to allow the AI to adapt quickly and deeply to tasks without requiring users to choose different models. Although current versions of Copilot still operate on GPT-4, the interface suggests preparations for GPT-5 integration. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has previously expressed a desire to improve the model selection process, aiming for a more unified AI experience. Microsoft has also been internally testing a “magic” mode, believed to be a codename for the smart mode. This development aligns with Microsoft’s history of swiftly incorporating OpenAI’s advances into its products, often ahead of official announcements. While Microsoft has not officially commented on the references to GPT-5 or the new smart mode, the rollout is expected soon if OpenAI’s final preparations proceed smoothly.
