Is OpenAI’s collaboration with Samsung in jeopardy as Sam Altman cancels Korea trip?

OpenAI and Samsung have been in discussions for several years regarding a potential collaboration on AI chips. Recently, many of Samsung’s group companies agreed to provide services to aid OpenAI in building extensive data centers. However, progress on a custom AI chip project with Samsung has been halted, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has canceled his upcoming trip to South Korea. Although the official reason given for the cancellation is unavoidable personal circumstances, there is speculation that the pause in the chip project may be a contributing factor. Altman was scheduled to meet with major South Korean companies, including Samsung Electronics, Kakao, and Naver, and attend an event at Samsung’s Digital City. Future plans for rescheduling the trip remain unclear. The chip project reportedly stalled due to strategic differences between the two companies.
