Samsung is set to invest an additional $1.9 billion in its semiconductor chip plant located in Austin, Texas. This significant investment aims to upgrade the facility with state-of-the-art chipmaking equipment, potentially paving the way for the production of advanced camera sensors for Apple. The collaboration between the two tech giants is rumored to focus on developing a 1/2.6-inch ultrawide camera sensor, possibly for the iPhone 18 and future models. Samsung’s long-standing presence in Texas has already garnered tax benefits from the US government, and with this new investment, further incentives may follow. The Austin City Council is expected to vote on extending the ‘Texas Enterprise Project’ designation, which could grant Samsung additional tax rebates. Since its establishment in 1996, Samsung’s Austin chip plant has seen over $40 billion in investments, marking it as the largest single investment in the state’s history.
