Telangana’s government is considering cost-effective alternatives to revive the Dr. B R Ambedkar Pranahita–Chevella Sujala Sravanthi project, focusing on technical and financial viability while addressing environmental issues. The revised plan involves a new alignment via the Sundilla Link, potentially reducing costs by 10 to 12 percent and halving land acquisition needs, saving an estimated Rs 1,500 to 1,600 crore. This approach avoids coal-bearing zones that previously caused delays. The project originally aimed to channel water from the Pranahita River through a lengthy canal, but coal deposits increased costs and risks. The new proposal suggests a direct route between Tummidihatti and Sundilla Barrages, bypassing coal zones, which is seen as more economical and technically feasible. The Irrigation Department is tasked with revalidating surveys and conducting updated studies to confirm the plan’s viability, potentially saving up to Rs 1,600 crore through reduced construction and land acquisition costs.
