iPadOS 26 introduces significant updates, making the iPad experience more akin to using a Mac. The new Liquid Glass material transforms the interface with a glossy and transparent look. However, the most notable change is in multitasking capabilities. The update allows iPad windows to function similarly to Mac windows, enabling users to open multiple app windows, rearrange them, and layer them as desired. While older iPads are limited to four open windows, newer models can handle more, facilitating a seamless transition between apps.
The new windowing system is optional, allowing users to choose between full-screen apps or multitasking. This system replaces the previous Slide Over and Split View features, although Stage Manager remains available. Resizing windows is simplified with a handle at the bottom right, and apps can be moved by dragging from the new menu bar, which includes Mac-like options for closing, minimizing, or maximizing windows.
Additional features include an App Library in the dock, an Exposé view for open windows, and a cursor that mimics the Mac’s arrow when using peripherals. Users not interested in multitasking can continue using full-screen apps as before.
Beyond multitasking, iPadOS 26 brings enhancements like a Mac-style list view in the Files app, background task support, and the introduction of a Phone app for Wi-Fi calling. While the update is stable, users are advised to back up their devices before upgrading due to potential beta bugs. Public beta testers can access iPadOS 26 by signing up on Apple’s beta testing website.
