Chicago commuters will face significant changes as the historic State and Lake “L” station in the Loop closes for a three-year reconstruction starting this Monday. The 130-year-old station will be demolished and replaced with a modern facility featuring a glass canopy, wider platforms, and expanded sidewalks. The new design will ensure ADA accessibility at all corners and offer accessible connections to the Red Line subway. During this period, trains on several lines will bypass the station, directing riders to nearby alternatives such as Clark and Lake, as well as Washington and Wabash. Some commuters expressed surprise at the three-year timeline, though the CTA had announced the project over a month in advance to reduce rider disruption. Drivers should anticipate street closures and traffic changes, with Lake Street limited to local traffic, and extended southbound closures on State Street. Northbound lanes on State Street at Lake Street will remain open to ease congestion. The revamped station is expected to open in 2029.
