Is the US Embassy warning Americans about the upcoming protest in Abuja?

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to its citizens ahead of a planned protest under the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow banner, set for October 20, 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory. The protest, organized by former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, is expected to be historic and peaceful, with participants gathering at Eagle Square and the Central Business District. The demonstration aims to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra, who has been detained since June 2021 on terrorism charges.

Sowore announced on social media that the protest will march towards the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, emphasizing its peaceful intent. However, the US Embassy has cautioned that the protest could lead to disruptions and potential violence, advising American citizens to avoid the protest areas and limit their movement throughout the city. The Embassy also recommended that children remain home from school and that domestic staff commuting from outside Abuja should not report to work on the day of the protest.

Americans in Nigeria are urged to take heightened security precautions, such as avoiding protest areas and crowds, exercising caution near large gatherings, and staying informed through local news. Citizens are also advised to review their personal security plans and ensure their mobile phones are charged in case of emergencies.
