Samsung to unveil shareholder return plan including special dividend

Samsung Electronics is expected to disclose a shareholder return plan later this month that may include a special dividend and greater detail on its return policy for the next three years. Reports from South Korea say the measures would follow a surge in profits tied to the AI memory boom and could return part of those gains to investors.

Shareholder return policy to be updated

The company’s existing 2024–2026 shareholder return policy is set to expire this year, prompting a new framework. The forthcoming announcement is reported to cover both a possible one-off special dividend and updated guidance on annual returns over the next three-year period.

Historically, Samsung’s shareholders—and particularly activist investors—have pressed the company for higher payouts. Samsung has previously used dividend enhancements and share buybacks to increase returns, and a special dividend this year would represent a direct return of some of the billions the company made from memory chips.

Some analysts cited in the reports expect Samsung may double the amount of its annual shareholder return under the new policy, though final details and figures have not been disclosed. The company is due to reveal the plan in the coming weeks.
