Sber clients can now pay for purchases using QR codes in Cambodia and Laos, after the national QR standards KHQR and Lao QR started working in SberBank Online — users simply scan the code at checkout or in an establishment.
Before confirming payment, the app displays the purchase cost in both the local currency and Russian rubles; conversion happens automatically, so there is no need to exchange money separately for such transactions.
In Cambodia, QR payments are accepted at over 4 million retail outlets nationwide. Cambodia and Laos have become the 14th and 15th countries, respectively, where bank clients can make payments this way abroad.
Sber app requirements and wider availability
To use the feature, SberBank Online version 16.10 or higher on Android, or 17.0 or higher on iOS, is required; users can check the installed version in the app settings. The service is already available in other Asian countries popular with Russian tourists, including Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, allowing Russian tourists to pay for everyday purchases through SberBank Online using the local QR infrastructure.
