Was personal data exposed in the Wake schools’ Canvas breach?

The Wake County Public School System in Cary, N.C., has alerted families to a cybersecurity breach involving the educational software Canvas, which may have exposed personal data of students and staff. The breach, discovered on April 25, was reported to parents 11 days later. Although no passwords, birth dates, or financial information appear to have been compromised, the incident has raised concerns among parents and staff about data security. This is the second such incident in two years, following a breach in 2024 involving PowerSchool credentials. Cybersecurity experts advise families to be vigilant against suspicious emails and to enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts. They also recommend updating passwords and educating children about online safety. As the investigation continues, state school officials urge Canvas users to watch for any unusual activity.
