What are the three breakthroughs that changed foldable phones forever?

As Samsung gears up for its next foldable-focused Unpacked event, the company reflects on seven years of innovation in foldable phones. The journey began long before the first commercial release in 2019 with the Galaxy Z Fold. Since then, Samsung has transformed its pioneering concepts into market-ready products with annual improvements. Recently, Samsung identified three pivotal innovations that have secured foldable phones’ position in the market:

Durability has been enhanced by replacing polymer displays with Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), first seen in the Galaxy Z Flip in 2020, which improved both robustness and user experience. The introduction of water resistance through an IPX8 rating in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 in 2021 demonstrated the coexistence of flexible mechanics and everyday usability. Additionally, the development of slimmer hinges, particularly with the Flex Hinge design in the 2023 Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, has allowed for thinner devices and eliminated the gap between folding halves.

Looking ahead, Samsung is poised to enter a new era for foldable phones, with expectations of unveiling a model featuring a wider aspect ratio at this summer’s Unpacked event. While it remains uncertain if this new form factor will revolutionize the segment, 2026 promises to be an exciting year for foldable phones. Samsung’s commitment to innovation continues, and anticipation is high for its next-generation devices.
