Apple is set to launch a budget-friendly MacBook in 2026, aiming to compete with affordable Chromebooks and Windows PCs. This new MacBook, priced below the $999 MacBook Air, is tailored for tasks like document editing, web browsing, and video streaming.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device will feature a display around 13 inches, slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air. It will likely prioritize cost over a slim design, maintaining a thickness comparable to the MacBook Air’s 0.44 inches.
The MacBook will sport a standard LCD display without advanced features like mini-LED or ProMotion. It may come in vibrant colors similar to the iMac, such as silver, blue, pink, and yellow.
Powered by the A18 Pro chip, first seen in the iPhone 16 Pro models, the MacBook promises efficiency and performance, comparable to the M1 chip for some tasks and faster for others. It will support basic computing needs and run macOS, offering an alternative to the iPad for those seeking a low-cost computing solution.
While it will handle light video editing and gaming, it won’t suit demanding, high-end games. The MacBook is expected to include limited ports, potentially featuring one or two USB-C ports. With its efficient chip and spacious design, it could offer battery life on par with or better than the MacBook Air’s 18-hour video playback.
Pricing details remain vague, but it’s expected to be significantly under $1,000, possibly between $499 and $799, aligning with Apple’s current product pricing. The launch is anticipated in the first half of 2026, possibly coinciding with updates to the MacBook Air.
