Since its debut in 2022, the Apple Watch Ultra has seen minimal updates, with only a new color introduced in 2023. However, significant changes are anticipated this year as Apple plans to integrate two major iPhone features into its high-end smartwatch. The Apple Watch Ultra 3, slated for a 2025 release, will include satellite connectivity and 5G capabilities, aligning with advancements seen in recent iPhone models.
Apple’s smartwatch sales have declined from a peak of 53.9 million units in 2022 to 38.3 million in 2023. To revitalize sales, Apple aims to introduce the Watch Ultra 3 with enhanced features. The new model will support emergency SOS via satellite, allowing users to send messages without cellular or Wi-Fi connections, a crucial tool for those in remote locations or engaging in outdoor activities.
The Watch Ultra 3 will also be the first to support 5G, utilizing the 5G RedCap standard designed for low-energy devices. This upgrade promises faster data transmission and improved coverage compared to the existing 4G LTE standard in smartwatches.
Additionally, Apple is reportedly developing a blood pressure monitoring feature for the Watch Ultra 3, although technical challenges remain. Achieving medical device certification will require the feature to meet stringent accuracy and reliability standards.
The Ultra 3 is expected to include an S10 chip or newer and offer faster charging capabilities, enhancements that were previously introduced with the Watch Series 10. These updates reflect Apple’s commitment to advancing its smartwatch technology.
