Farmers in Scotland are being urged to enhance their security measures following a significant increase in quad bike thefts. The cost of these thefts has risen by 90% compared to last year, with the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway being the most affected areas. These vehicles are crucial for farm operations, making their theft particularly disruptive. To combat the issue, farmers are advised to remove keys when not in use, store vehicles securely, and consider using physical deterrents and GPS tracking devices. The Equipment Theft (Prevention) Act, passed in 2023, aims to curb such crimes by mandating anti-theft features on machinery. Calls are being made for similar legislation in Scotland to better protect rural communities.
