Apple is gearing up to unveil a revolutionary design for its 20th-anniversary iPhone, featuring a display that elegantly curves around all four edges, offering a seamless visual experience. This design marks a significant shift since the iPhone X, which introduced a notched display and swipe-based navigation. The new iPhone will initially use OLED technology with a magnesium-silver alloy, which might cause some image distortion and brightness issues at the curved edges. However, Apple plans to address these challenges by 2028 with advanced transparent electrodes using indium zinc oxide, enhancing transparency and reducing distortion. Both Samsung and LG Display are preparing for this two-stage rollout, with LG investing significantly in OLED infrastructure. Meanwhile, Samsung is assessing its production capabilities to meet the new requirements. The future iPhone is anticipated to be a mostly glass, curved device with an edge-to-edge display, further pushing the boundaries of smartphone design.
