Will the Philippines be AI-powered by 2028?

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is working towards transforming the Philippines into an AI-powered nation by 2028 through its National AI Strategy (NAIS PH). During the recent National AI Stakeholders’ Conference in Manila, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. outlined plans to develop a robust infrastructure, create a future-ready workforce, promote ethical governance, and enhance research and innovation using AI as a tool for inclusion. AI is already being utilized in various sectors such as transportation, financial services, creative industries, energy monitoring, and national defense. The DOST has invested over PHP2.3 million in 113 AI-related projects, emphasizing the potential of Filipino innovation. The country’s AI framework began in 2017 with collaboration across government agencies and private partners. Key strategies include infrastructure, workforce development, innovation, data governance, and deployment. The goal is to integrate AI into the national fabric in an ethical, sustainable, and inclusive manner. The DOST aims to train 10,000 AI-capable workers and expand AI education and awareness. The two-day conference brought together leaders from various sectors to foster a collaborative AI ecosystem.
