Could a new WhatsApp scam lock you out of your account?

A new scam on WhatsApp is circulating, posing a significant threat to users by potentially locking them out of their accounts. This scam involves receiving a message from a friend urging you to vote in a contest, which appears innocent but is actually a trap. Once you click on the link, you are directed to a fraudulent website that asks for your phone number and a security code sent to your device. Providing these details allows cybercriminals to access and control your WhatsApp account. They then use your account to send deceptive messages to your contacts, potentially leading to financial loss. The scam has primarily affected users in parts of Europe, including Poland, Romania, and Germany, but could spread further. To protect yourself, never share your WhatsApp verification code, verify requests for money through direct calls, and report suspicious messages. If your account is compromised, try to regain control by requesting a new verification code, contact WhatsApp support, inform your bank, and alert your contacts.
