Tesla may soon support Apple Car Keys, as the company appears to be moving towards integrating native digital car keys at the system level. Recent updates to Tesla’s mobile app have revealed references to Harmony Wallet Key Cards, hinting at a shift in Tesla’s approach to mobile device integration. Currently, Tesla’s Phone Key uses Bluetooth to connect the vehicle with the app on a smartphone. In contrast, a native wallet key is stored at the operating system level, offering enhanced reliability and accessibility through secure hardware elements. The app update suggests initial integration with Huawei’s HarmonyOS, widely used in China, where Tesla often tests new features. While Apple Wallet and Google Wallet are not explicitly mentioned, the functionality aligns with Apple’s digital car keys, introduced in 2020, which use NFC, Bluetooth, or ultra wideband for unlocking, locking, and starting vehicles. Recently, Rivian, Porsche, Toyota, and General Motors have also moved towards supporting digital car keys in their vehicles.
