In 2021, Samsung partnered with AMD to develop GPUs for its Exynos chips, resulting in powerful graphics processors that introduced innovative technologies. However, Samsung is reportedly planning to end this collaboration and create its own GPU architecture for future Exynos chips. The Exynos 2800 is expected to be the first to feature this in-house technology, potentially debuting with the Galaxy S28 series in 2028. This move could allow Samsung to enhance the performance of its Galaxy smartphones and tablets by integrating fully in-house designed chips and GPUs. The Exynos 2200, 2400, and 2500 chips utilized AMD-developed GPUs, while the Exynos 2600 marks Samsung’s initial step in developing AMD’s RDNA architecture in-house. With the Exynos 2800, the company aims to introduce a GPU built entirely on its own architecture. Achieving this milestone would place Samsung among a select group of companies, including AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, that have successfully developed their own GPU architectures. Over the past three years, Samsung’s semiconductor division has actively recruited GPU engineers, offering competitive salaries between KRW 300-400 million annually. Notably, they recently hired John Rayfield, a renowned GPU expert with a background at AMD, Broadcom, and Intel.
