Will China’s AI strategy shift away from open-source models?

In China’s fiercely competitive tech industry, the decision to release advanced AI models for free may appear counter-intuitive, yet it has become a key business strategy. At an event at the University of Hong Kong, Alibaba’s chairman, Joe Tsai, explained that open-sourcing AI models could offer global advantages by reducing costs, particularly benefiting countries with limited resources. Alibaba’s leading AI model, Qwen, has amassed nearly a billion downloads over three years, marking it as the most popular open-source model globally. Despite this success, the question of profitability remains. When asked about the financial benefits of such generosity, Tsai candidly stated that the company does not profit directly from AI models. Instead, Alibaba focuses on monetizing inference and cloud services while embedding open-source AI into its corporate ethos. The challenge of generating revenue from models lacking intellectual property protections continues to be a pressing issue.
