Earlier this week, over 40,000 workers at Samsung Electronics initiated a strike, significantly impacting operations at the company’s major semiconductor facility in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. The strike has led to a notable decrease in semiconductor production, with foundry and memory chip outputs dropping by 58% and 18%, respectively, during the overnight shift on Thursday. The workers, represented by the company’s union, are demanding higher wages and a larger share of the company’s profits. They are calling for the removal of the performance-based cap and a 15% allocation of operating profits as performance bonuses for unionized workers. Despite Samsung Electronics achieving record profits in the recent quarter, the strike underscores the growing tension between the workforce and management amidst high demand for chips.
