The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro is expected to maintain the anodized aluminum finish that debuted with the iPhone 17 Pro, despite ongoing concerns about its durability. Users have frequently reported surface chipping on the iPhone 17 Pro, but Apple has classified these issues as normal wear and tear, attributing them to the inherent characteristics of the aluminum alloy.
The iPhone 17 Pro marked a departure from the titanium frames used in previous Pro models, opting for an anodized aluminum unibody design. However, durability issues arose soon after its release, particularly with the Dark Blue and Cosmic Orange models, which were found to scratch more easily. Visible marks were noted on display units shortly after they became available, and tests revealed that while the anodized shell withstands everyday items, the camera plateau is vulnerable to chipping and scratching.
Additionally, some Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro units experienced a color shift, with the aluminum frame and camera plateau changing to a rose-gold or pink hue, leading to some device replacements by Apple Support.
For the iPhone 18 Pro, rumors suggest four color options: Dark Cherry, Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver. Dark Cherry is anticipated to be the standout new color, a muted wine-like red, while a black option will not be available for the second year in a row. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be unveiled in September 2026, alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
