How is Port Byron School District responding to the Canvas cybersecurity breach?

The Port Byron Central School District has alerted families about a cybersecurity breach involving Canvas, an online learning management system widely used by schools. The breach, linked to Instructure, the company behind Canvas, was confirmed on May 1, revealing that a criminal actor gained unauthorized access to parts of its systems. The incident has impacted numerous educational institutions globally, including Port Byron. Information potentially exposed includes student and parent names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and internal Canvas messages between students and teachers. However, there is no evidence that passwords or birth dates were compromised. Instructure has contained the breach by revoking unauthorized access, patching vulnerabilities, and rotating security keys. Families are advised to be vigilant against phishing attempts or fraudulent emails that might exploit leaked information. While password data is not believed to have been accessed, updating passwords is recommended as a precaution. This notification comes amidst a surge of cyberattacks targeting educational institutions and third-party technology vendors handling student information. The district will keep monitoring updates from Instructure’s ongoing forensic investigation and will provide further information if necessary.
