Apple is reportedly facing challenges in enhancing the brightness of its iPhone displays, with significant improvements still years away. The iPhone 18 Pro is not expected to feature the advanced dual-layer OLED technology that could boost outdoor brightness, as Apple’s current thermal management limits sustained luminance. Despite previous predictions, the iPhone 17 Pro made little progress in maintaining peak brightness levels outdoors. Without changes to Apple’s thermal throttling strategy, dual-layer OLED remains the key to significant brightness enhancements. Apple is considering a “simplified tandem” OLED design, which involves stacking only the blue sub-pixel layer, unlike the full tandem OLED used in the iPad Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro is set to adopt LTPO+ technology, improving battery efficiency but not addressing brightness issues. Apple is expected to collaborate with Samsung Display and LG Display, while China’s BOE is excluded due to quality concerns. Dual-layer OLED technology could reduce heat generation and improve sustained outdoor brightness, but its implementation in iPhones appears to be several years away.
