Apple CarPlay is set to welcome another AI chatbot, as Google prepares to introduce its Gemini assistant to the platform. Code in the Google Maps iOS app indicates that Gemini will soon be integrated into Google Maps on CarPlay, enabling drivers to request directions and information hands-free. Although Gemini is already available on iPhone, its functionality in Google Maps hasn’t extended to CarPlay yet. The forthcoming integration will allow users to benefit from the “Ask Maps” feature, capable of answering complex questions about locations and destinations. Once launched, Gemini will join ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok as the fourth AI chatbot in CarPlay. This surge in AI assistants follows the release of iOS 26.4, which opened up opportunities for third-party voice-driven apps. Developers must adhere to guidelines that limit visual distractions and ensure safety. Notably absent from CarPlay’s AI lineup is Apple’s Siri, which currently lacks real-time conversational capabilities. However, an upgraded Siri, powered by Gemini, is anticipated with the release of iOS 27 later this year.
