Earlier this year, Satechi introduced the Thunderbolt 5 CubeDock, priced at $400. This dock not only offers Thunderbolt 5 connectivity but also includes an SSD enclosure for additional storage. Designed to resemble the Mac mini, the CubeDock is compact and matches Apple’s silver hardware. The front panel features a variety of ports, including a USB-C port capable of 30W charging, useful for fast charging an iPhone or powering an iPad or MacBook Air.
The back of the CubeDock is equipped with a 2.5Gb Ethernet port, multiple Thunderbolt 5 ports, and additional USB ports, providing ample connectivity options. It can deliver 140W to a MacBook, ensuring fast charging for the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The dock also supports up to three 8K displays at 60Hz, although 8K compatibility is limited to Windows machines.
An SSD enclosure at the bottom allows for up to 8TB of NVMe SSD storage, though it doesn’t include an SSD, requiring a separate purchase. The installation process is straightforward but requires careful handling of the screws. The CubeDock’s fan circulates air efficiently, though it emits a subtle whine that might bother sensitive users.
Despite the fan noise, the CubeDock remains a solid option for those needing multiple display and peripheral connections. It offers a sleek design that complements Apple’s aesthetic and keeps desks organized by reducing cable clutter. With Thunderbolt 5’s increased bandwidth, the CubeDock is an attractive choice for users with newer Macs, providing a future-proof solution for expanding connectivity. The Satechi Thunderbolt 5 CubeDock is available for purchase on Satechi’s website and Amazon for $399.99.
