Was student information accessed in the Pittsfield school district breach?

The Pittsfield Public School District has alerted families to a cybersecurity breach involving Canvas, the district’s learning management system. On Sunday, the district announced that student names, email addresses, ID numbers, and messages might have been accessed. However, Instructure, the owner of Canvas, has stated that there is no evidence suggesting that passwords, birth dates, Social Security numbers, financial information, or other government identifiers were compromised. An update from Instructure regarding any necessary actions for the district is expected by Tuesday. Meanwhile, the district advises families to avoid clicking on suspicious links, be wary of requests for passwords or personal information, and report any suspicious communications immediately. Canvas services have been restored, and Instructure has implemented security measures, including disabling certain accounts linked to a vulnerability. Parents with questions or concerns can reach the Pittsfield Public Schools Technology Department by phone at 413-499-9568 or by email at contact-tech@pittsfield.net.
