Google has introduced a new line of Googlebook laptops, centered around the Gemini AI technology. These devices will integrate Android and ChromeOS, offering a seamless user experience. The standout feature is the Magic Pointer, replacing the traditional cursor, allowing users to interact with content in innovative ways. For instance, pointing at a date in an email can schedule a meeting, while selecting images can enable joint visualization. The Magic Pointer also includes tools for asking, comparing, and combining information.
A new Android feature, Create My Widget, will allow users to design custom widgets using a Gemini prompt. This feature will enable internet searches and integration with Google apps like Gmail and Calendar, creating a personalized dashboard for widget creation.
With Android compatibility, transitioning between a Googlebook and an Android smartphone will be effortless. Users can access smartphone apps directly on the Googlebook, similar to Apple’s iPhone Mirroring. The Quick Access feature will facilitate viewing, searching, or inserting files from a smartphone without needing a file transfer.
Google is collaborating with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to produce the first Googlebooks, promising premium craftsmanship and diverse designs. A distinctive “glowbar” on the lid will mark these laptops. While pricing details remain undisclosed, the emphasis on premium build suggests they might be priced above Apple’s budget-friendly MacBook Neo, or possibly at a similar level to compete on both price and quality. The Googlebooks are expected to launch this fall.
