Are there alternatives to 911 for mental health and drug-related calls in Burlington?

Burlington plans to introduce new signs in parks and downtown areas, offering alternative contact numbers for situations where calling 911 might not be necessary. This initiative, proposed by South District Councilor Ranjit “Buddy” Singh, aims to empower residents to contribute to community safety by providing clear guidance on whom to contact in various scenarios. More than 100 signs will be printed for approximately $3,000 following City Council approval. The signs will list five contact numbers for issues ranging from criminal behavior to mental health crises and substance abuse. These numbers include the Burlington Police Department’s non-emergency line and the Howard Center’s Street Outreach team. Singh emphasized the importance of a comprehensive community safety response and consulted with police and fire chiefs, who responded positively. The goal is to have the signs ready and installed in key areas before summer.
