Apple is gearing up for a major camera upgrade in its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, with a new variable aperture lens expected to cost the company 50% more than the current camera units. This innovative feature will allow the lens to adjust its opening size, enhancing exposure control and depth of field flexibility, marking a departure from the fixed f/1.78 aperture used in previous iPhone Pro models. The component’s higher price is attributed to its advanced technology, which promises improved photography capabilities. Sunny Optical, a key supplier for Apple, is set to fulfill 40 to 50% of these orders. The company is also expanding its role as a compact camera module supplier, notably for the MacBook Neo, which has surpassed sales expectations. Looking ahead, the 2028 iPhone is anticipated to adopt a new ultra-wide camera module design, potentially increasing efficiency and image quality. Sunny Optical is poised to be a significant supplier for this future upgrade. Beyond its work with Apple, Sunny Optical has secured contracts to provide components for two OpenAI devices, including a smartphone and another mobile device. The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to debut in the fall, alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
