What Upgrades Does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra Offer Without Gaining Weight?

Samsung is set to revolutionize its foldable lineup with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, bringing significant enhancements over its predecessor. The new model boasts a 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired charging, a notable upgrade from the Z Fold 7’s 4,400mAh and 25W. Impressively, these improvements come without an increase in weight, maintaining a light 215g, while the unfolded thickness is slightly reduced to 4.1mm.

For the first time in the Fold Ultra series, the device will support approximately 20W Qi2.2 wireless charging, compatible with MagSafe accessories. The design, display sizes, and form factor remain consistent with the Z Fold 7, with the addition of a new chip.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the wider Z Fold 8 are anticipated to make their debut at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22, 2026, alongside other new releases like the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Watch 9 series. The Z Fold 8 Ultra’s advancements in battery and charging technology mark a significant leap for the series, without compromising on weight or thickness.

The engineering feat of increasing the battery capacity by 600mAh, while reducing thickness and maintaining weight, highlights Samsung’s progress in battery technology, potentially utilizing silicon-carbon chemistry. This advancement is a response to previous criticisms of the Z Fold 7’s charging speed, reducing full charge time from over 80 minutes to approximately 65 minutes.

The new naming convention clarifies the lineup, with the wider model simply named Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a 4,800mAh battery and 45W charging. The Ultra version retains its taller, narrower form and offers a compelling upgrade for users of older models, though current Z Fold 7 owners must weigh the benefits of the battery and charging improvements against the cost of upgrading.
