Will iOS 27’s landscape mode enhance Apple apps for the ‘iPhone Ultra’?

iOS 27 introduces landscape mode to a wider range of Apple’s built-in iPhone apps, such as Apple Music, Podcasts, Fitness, Health, and more. Currently, landscape support in Apple Music and Podcasts is limited to the audio player. Many apps now feature a left-aligned sidebar when in landscape mode, and in Messages, users can collapse the sidebar to display only names and profile pictures.

Previously, landscape mode was available in apps like Apple Maps, Calendar, and Mail, but iOS 27 expands this feature to many more applications. This enhancement could be paving the way for the anticipated “iPhone Ultra,” as apps optimized for landscape mode would complement the rumored foldable device.

Additionally, iOS 27 includes landscape support for Live Activities in the Dynamic Island. To activate landscape mode in supported apps, users need to turn their iPhone sideways with Portrait Orientation Lock disabled.

Landscape-oriented apps were more prevalent in earlier iOS versions, with the Home Screen supporting landscape mode on models like the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus, a feature discontinued with the iPhone X. iOS 27 is currently in beta and expected to launch in September, coinciding with the rumored unveiling of the “iPhone Ultra.”
