Who are the Turing Award winners speaking at the Beijing AI conference?

The eighth annual Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence Conference commenced at the Zhongguancun International Innovation Center in Beijing on June 12, 2026, featuring speeches from two distinguished Turing Award winners. Whitfield Diffie, recognized for his pioneering work in cryptography alongside Martin Hellman, discussed the intersection of artificial intelligence and security. He highlighted the potential for AI to enhance the testing and validation of cryptographic systems, predicting a future where machines become indispensable by 2050. Engaging in a dialogue with AI security researcher Li Chaozhuo, Diffie expressed optimism about the evolving relationship between humans and AI. Andrew Barto, the 2024 Turing Award recipient, addressed the conference via video link, focusing on reinforcement learning and its intrinsic ties to neural networks. He emphasized the significance of reinforcement learning in developing autonomous AI systems, suggesting that combining it with insights from the brain’s reward system could drive future advancements. The two-day event gathered over 200 experts and scholars, alongside 40 business leaders, featuring 25 thematic seminars and 200 presentations on cutting-edge AI topics. Since its inception in 2019, the conference has attracted participants from over 30 countries, with the BAAI aiming to foster a world-class innovation ecosystem.
