In Lawrence, Kansas, a new AI-powered chatbot has been developed to assist families seeking information on autism. Created by researchers at the University of Kansas, the Kansas Autism and Disability Resource Navigator offers accurate and private guidance by using verified resources specific to Kansas. Launched in January, the tool has already answered over 1,000 questions from more than 500 users. It helps families find autism services, understand ABA therapy, and navigate developmental disability organizations. However, the future of this service is uncertain as state funding from the American Rescue Plan Act is ending. The Kansas Family Support Center, which manages the navigator, has trained thousands of providers and supported hundreds of crisis referrals. The center aligns with the Kansas TB14 Pilot Plan, aiming to reduce foster care numbers by promoting stable family placements. Without continued funding, the beneficial services provided by the center risk disappearing, according to project leader Jay Buzhardt.
