Will China set new records with its 2026 AI conference?

China is set to host the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai from July 17 to 20. The event aims to foster global cooperation in AI development and is expected to see unprecedented participation. The conference will serve as a platform for discussing technological innovation, promoting achievements, and advancing AI for the benefit of all. Chinese open-source AI models, such as DeepSeek and Qwen, have gained popularity in both the Global South and developed countries, helping to lower the barriers and costs associated with AI usage. The theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future” underscores the transformative potential of AI through international collaboration, research, and public engagement. This year’s conference will feature over 1,400 prominent guests and more than 1,100 companies showcasing over 3,000 advanced exhibits, including 300 new AI solutions making their global debut. Key topics will include global AI governance and security, standards for AI models and agents, and fair trade within the AI industrial chain. China’s unique open-source development approach has bolstered its domestic AI capabilities and contributed to global digital growth, especially for developing countries.
