Apple has unveiled a series of new CarPlay features with the release of iOS 27, enhancing the in-car experience for both drivers and passengers. Among the standout features is the integration of video apps, allowing users to browse and watch videos on their car’s display while parked. For safety, video playback switches to audio when the vehicle is in motion. Additionally, apps compatible with AirPlay can stream content directly to the car’s screen, although car manufacturers need to enable this feature, and none have announced plans to do so yet.
The updated Siri AI offers hands-free interaction, enabling users to complete tasks and retrieve information while driving. Conversations initiated through CarPlay can be continued on the iPhone later. Audio improvements include a persistent mini-player for the Now Playing interface, complete with artwork and playback controls, and a progress bar for easy navigation through media.
CarPlay also introduces new wallpapers with wave-style designs and supports larger, interactive content thumbnails, along with updated Liquid Glass icons for apps like Maps and Weather. Navigation apps can now share route data with vehicles, providing information such as EV charging stops, and wireless CarPlay boasts enhanced reliability and GPS accuracy.
Voice control has been expanded to all app categories, with a new template for app integration. Natural language improvements in Apple Maps extend to CarPlay, allowing users to request routes that avoid specific road types. To utilize these features, users need an iPhone with iOS 27, and for Siri AI, an iPhone 15 Pro or later is required.
