Title: U.S. State Department Issues Urgent Security Alert; Urges “Extreme Caution” for Americans Abroad
Published July 20, 2026
The U.S. State Department on Saturday issued an urgent security alert urging American citizens living or traveling overseas — particularly in the Middle East — to exercise “extreme caution” amid a rising number of threats against diplomatic facilities and other U.S. interests.
What the alert says
The statement warns that “due to increased tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with a potential for unpredictable escalation.” It advises Americans to stay informed through reliable sources and to follow security messages issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Recent incidents in Jordan
A day before the alert, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that two U.S. service members were killed in Jordan while repelling an Iranian attack involving ballistic missiles and drones. A third service member is listed as missing. Four additional U.S. soldiers were evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and have since been released.
Possible travel impacts
The alert cautions that travel disruptions are possible, including flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures. The State Department also notes that U.S. diplomatic facilities — even those outside the Middle East — have received threats; Iran-affiliated groups could target U.S. interests.
