Photon Queue has closed an oversubscribed $4 million seed round led by Playground Genesis, the investment arm of Playground Global, to commercialize a room-temperature quantum memory designed to address optical synchronization challenges in distributed quantum architectures. The startup, spun out of the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign in 2024 and based in Champaign, says it has already shipped initial units to national laboratories and academic research groups.
Room‑temperature quantum memory: free‑space optics and operational simplicity
Photon Queue’s technology is built around free‑space optical storage loops. The device traps photons by routing them through high‑reflectivity mirror arrangements and low‑loss optical switches, preserving the optical signal until downstream quantum gates or detectors are ready. This linear, free‑space approach operates at room temperature, aiming to simplify integration and operation in photonic and distributed quantum systems.
