Apple is building a software mechanism that can remotely restrict access to an iPhone if its owner falls behind on installment payments, according to artifacts found in the iOS 27 beta. Identified in the code, the feature would severely limit the smartphone’s functionality until the outstanding payments are resolved.

Analysis of the beta code reveals a new component labeled “App Managed Features” and an associated “Restricted Mode.” When activated, Restricted Mode would lock users out of most of the phone’s core features, leaving only a narrowly defined set of apps available: App Store (to allow updates for payment‑related apps), Settings, Wallet, Passwords, Health, Clock, Magnifier, and Accessibility. Emergency calls and certain critical notifications would reportedly remain functional, while entertainment functions such as social networks, games, and the camera would be disabled.
