Google will replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Galaxy phones, tablets and smartwatches starting September 4, 2026, the company informed Google Assistant users by email. The transition will roll out over a few weeks to reach all eligible Galaxy devices, and once Google Assistant is removed users will no longer be able to switch back.
If a Galaxy device meets the minimum system requirements to run Gemini, users will not be able to revert to Google Assistant after the transition occurs.
Gemini rollout and affected accessories
Paired Galaxy Buds will also transition to Gemini for voice commands. Likewise, Android Auto sessions connected to a Galaxy phone will rely solely on Gemini for voice commands and other features once the change takes effect.
Google says it is committed to offering users an improved experience with Gemini. However, many people who have already switched from Google Assistant to Gemini report that the new AI assistant is relatively slower and less reliable for certain basic tasks.
