Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 can save images at 12MP even when users select the 24MP option, and the company has identified four situations in which that will happen.
The Fold 8’s primary camera captures images at 12MP by default, while a 24MP capture option is also available, as on other Samsung phones. Some users reported that the phone occasionally recorded 12MP photos despite having 24MP selected; one user posted the issue on Samsung’s Korean Community and said closing and reopening the Camera app temporarily fixed the problem before it returned. Samsung asked that user to submit an Error Report so it could investigate.
When the Galaxy Z Fold 8 saves 12MP images
According to Samsung, the device is designed to capture 12MP images instead of 24MP in four scenarios: when using zoom, when shooting in low-light conditions, when taking multiple photos in quick succession, and when the device overheats with its surface temperature reaching 45°C or higher.
After examining the user’s device logs, Samsung found the phone’s temperature had risen to 45°C while the photos were being taken, and that rise in temperature caused the phone to automatically record 12MP images despite the 24MP setting.
User report and company response
The user replied that, when producing images to demonstrate the issue for the Error Report, there was about a 10-second gap between each shot and the phone was in an air-conditioned room. The user also asked why the phone had reached 45°C under those conditions; Samsung has not yet responded to that question. Samsung is expected to release a software update to improve the phone’s thermal management.
