The Nigerian Army said it detected and is responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at about 5pm, and warned the public and the media to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading posts.
In a statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, the military said the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity breach and that it had “activated immediate technical and protective measures to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.” The statement added: “The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account.” The Army said these measures were also aimed at safeguarding the integrity of information disseminated through the account and that efforts were ongoing to fully secure the account and restore exclusive administrative control.
Nigerian Army guidance for verifying information
The military warned that any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content published from the affected account should be disregarded, noting that “Such content does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army.” It urged members of the public and the media to verify information about its activities through its other official communication platforms pending resolution of the incident. Those channels were listed as Facebook accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; Instagram accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; X account @nigerianarmyinfo; and YouTube accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfotv.
The Army said it remained committed to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication, appreciated the vigilance, understanding and cooperation of members of the public, and said further updates would be provided as necessary.
