Apple last week announced two new Mac mini models: an entry-level model with the all‑new M6 chip and a higher‑end model using the M5 Pro chip that debuted in the MacBook Pro earlier this year. The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 (12‑core CPU, 16GB unified memory, 256GB storage) and the M5 Pro Mac mini starts at $1,699 (15‑core CPU, 24GB memory, 512GB storage), with both available to pre‑order now and launching on Tuesday, September 22.
What the two Mac mini models share
Both machines are physically identical and share the majority of their hardware: the same 5.0 by 5.0 inch silver aluminum enclosure unchanged since 2024; Neural Accelerators in every GPU core (a first for the Mac mini); Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 via the N1 chip (also a first for the Mac mini); 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard with an optional 10Gb Ethernet configuration; two front USB‑C ports and a headphone jack with high‑impedance headphone support; an HDMI port and native support for up to three external displays; Genlock over USB‑C for synchronizing a display with a camera such as the iPhone 17 Pro; and macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.
Key technical differences
The two Mac mini models diverge primarily in silicon, memory, storage and I/O. The M6 chip is built on TSMC’s 2nm (N2) process and features a 12‑core CPU (two super cores, four performance cores, six efficiency cores), a 12‑core GPU with updated shader architecture, Dynamic Caching and hardware‑accelerated ray tracing with 50% higher geometry rates, a Dual 16‑core Neural Engine (Apple says it delivers up to 2x the peak compute of the single Neural Engine used in the M5 Pro), and up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth. The M6 model ships with 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB of unified memory and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB; it also has three Thunderbolt 4 ports.
The M5 Pro chip is built on TSMC’s 3nm (N3P) process and is offered with 15‑core or 18‑core CPU options (up to six super cores and 12 performance cores), and 16‑core or 20‑core GPU options with an enhanced shader core and third‑generation ray tracing. The M5 Pro has a 16‑core Neural Engine, up to 307GB/s memory bandwidth, and supports 24GB, 48GB, or 64GB of unified memory. Storage on the M5 Pro extends to 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB. It includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, and Thunderbolt 5 enables clustering multiple Mac mini systems together to run large AI models on device.
Weights and starting prices differ slightly: the M6 Mac mini weighs 1.5 pounds (0.67 kg) and starts at $899; the M5 Pro Mac mini weighs 1.6 pounds (0.73 kg) and starts at $1,699. The M6 model is the only Mac mini with Apple’s claim of the world’s fastest single‑threaded CPU core, according to Apple.
Which Mac mini should you buy?
For the majority of buyers, the M6 model is the right choice, and not only because it is $800 cheaper. It is the newer chip (2nm) and, Apple says, contains the world’s fastest CPU core; it is also the only Mac mini with the Dual 16‑core Neural Engine. If your workload is dominated by everyday productivity, web work, photo editing, coding, or light on‑device AI, the M6 should feel marginally faster in day‑to‑day use—especially for single‑core tasks—and will be more future‑proof for those uses.
Choosing the M5 Pro means accepting older silicon in exchange for broader, scalable performance rather than per‑core speed. The M5 Pro’s advantages—up to 18 CPU cores vs. 12, up to 20 GPU cores vs. 12, and 307GB/s vs. 170GB/s memory bandwidth—only materially benefit sustained, heavily parallel workloads such as video rendering, 3D and VFX production, compilation of large codebases, and scientific simulation.
Memory capacity is a clear dividing line: the M6 tops out at 32GB unified memory, while the M5 Pro reaches 64GB. If you plan to run large local language models, work with complex 3D scenes, or keep large datasets resident in memory, the M6 cannot be configured high enough. Storage follows the same limit: the M6 is capped at 2TB while the M5 Pro goes to 8TB. Thunderbolt is another hard limit—Thunderbolt 5 on the M5 Pro offers double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4 on the M6 and enables Mac mini clustering over Thunderbolt 5 for local AI model deployment or high‑speed external storage arrays.
Upgrades, price parity and longevity
A practical warning applies to configuring the M6 upward: adding 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage to the M6 pushes its price well above the $899 starting point and narrows the gap to the M5 Pro entry configuration. At that point, the M5 Pro entry model becomes a more sensible purchase for professional users because the extra cost buys substantially more CPU and GPU capacity, faster memory, and Thunderbolt 5 rather than only larger capacity.
Finally, Apple reportedly has no plans for an M6 Pro chip, so the M5 Pro will remain the highest‑end Mac mini option until the M7 family arrives in 2027. Buyers who want the newest Apple silicon in the smallest desktop Apple sells can obtain it only by choosing the $899 M6 model.
