OpenReserve secures $25M seed led by a16z for blockchain bank

Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto division said on September 3 that it is leading a $25 million seed round in OpenReserve, a startup building a blockchain-powered, ‘continuous’ bank that never closes. The firm described OpenReserve as a bank with a programmable core ledger designed for instant settlement enabled by tokenized deposits and stablecoins.

OpenReserve positions itself as an always-open institution that combines continuous money movement with the compliance and security expected of a regulated bank. The company says traditional banking and its operating hours slow finance, and that fintech has largely improved only the front end of services.

The startup aims to merge always-on money with regulated credit, building lending infrastructure on top of instant transactions settled on its programmable ledger. Andreessen Horowitz framed this approach as an upgrade to banking that leverages stablecoins for continuous settlement while layering regulated credit on top.

Founder Dee Choubey, who previously built the consumer finance platform MoneyLion, is leading the effort. The announcement did not include a public launch date or disclose OpenReserve’s charter status.

Andreessen Horowitz did not name other investors in the round or specify how the capital will be allocated between technology, licensing and lending operations. The firm noted that de novo bank charters collapsed after the global financial crisis and have only recently begun to recover, an opening it sees for purpose-built institutions on modern infrastructure. The round follows Augustus’s recent $180 million raise for a stablecoin clearing bank.
